ABOUT US

Our Purpose

Since 1883 The Lawyers Club of Chicago (including its predecessors, The Law Club of the City of Chicago and the Legal Club of Chicago), have promoted social interaction and tolerant discussion of questions of interest among lawyers and judges in Chicago.  The Club offers an opportunity for members of the legal profession (including lawyers in private practice, lawyers in-house or in the public sector or in academics, and members of the judiciary) to meet informally to exchange views, to enjoy each other’s company, and to hear interesting and distinguished speakers on a wide variety of important topics.  Both younger and older lawyers benefit from contact with each other in a relaxed social setting.  The Club offers a time out from the billable hour.

Our Next Meeting: Save The Date

Please join The Lawyers Club of Chicago on Monday, June 15, 2009.  Our guest speaker will be Supreme Court scholar and author Jeffrey Rosen.  Mr. Rosen will be sharing perspectives he has gained as a legal scholar and as a reporter.  His book, The Supreme Court: The Personalities and Rivalries that Define America, is a bestseller and companion to the PBS documentary series The Supreme Court.  The book examines the Court's history of bench rivalries and ways in which justices guided by a strong ideology spar with those who conform to evolving ideologies.  Rosen also illustrates how temperament relates to judicial success or failure and the subsequent effects on American society.  In researching the book, Rosen had the opportunity to meet with Chief Justice Roberts and explore his thoughts and insights on judicial temperament as well as his tenure as Chief Justice.  With President Obama facing his first appointment to the Supreme Court, you won't want to miss what is sure to be a stimulating and insightful look at the Supreme Court, past, present and future.

The meeting will be held at Union League Club of Chicago, 65 West Jackson Boulevard.  The cost of this event will be $35 per person.  The program will begin at 11:45 a.m. with lunch served promptly at 12:00 p.m.

Please consider sponsoring new candidates for membership.  If your friends in the profession join now, they can enjoy the full slate of events for our 2009-10 program year.  Your Board of Directors will ask the members present at the next meeting to approve new members, so get the applications in today.
