The Club at a Glance

The Lawyers Club consists of approximately 900 judges and lawyers in the Chicago area.  Since 1883, the Club (through its predecessor clubs, The Law Club of Chicago and the Legal Club of Chicago) has promoted social interaction, professionalism and tolerant discussions of questions of interest among lawyers and judges in Chicago.

The Club meets approximately six times a year for lunch or dinner and a speaker.  The setting is a private informal gathering of our members only and is not on the record.  The press is not invited.

Past speakers over the years have included Clarence Darrow, John Wigmore, Roscoe Pound, Adlai E. Stevenson, Judge Robert Bork, Attorney General (and former Circuit Judge), Griffin Bell, Rep. Henry Hyde, University of Chicago Dean Edward Levi, Alexander Haig and Solicitor Generals Rex Lee and Ken Starr.

U.S. Supreme Court Justices that have spoken to the Club include John Paul Stevens, Stephen Breyer, Sandra Day O’Connor and Samuel Alito.  Chief Judges of the Seventh Circuit that have spoken include Richard Posner, Joel Flaum and Frank Easterbrook.

Other speakers of note that have appeared before our members include Anita Alvarez, Cheryle Jackson, James H. Wooten, Jr., Rod Palmore, Joy Cunningham, Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. and Emanuel Cleaver II.
